Background: Continuing its push for initiative, discovery and respect for the conservation of the environment, the Associação Amigos do Cáster is once again organising the photographic competition as part of the “Ambiente e Imagens Dispersas 2013 – 9th Ovar Photography Journeys”. This event involves displaying photographic work on the theme “Nature and Wildlife” and “Photojournalism”, as well as the photographic work of this year’s winners.

Photographic Competition Structure:The photographs sent to the competition must be within one of the following three categories: “Fauna”, “Flora and Fungus” or “Natural landscape / Habitats”. The best photograph of each category will be awarded. The winner of “Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013″ will be chosen from these three photographs.

Entrants: The competition is open to everyone except members of the event organizers.

How to enter the competition: Entrants must send their photographs via webform. In order to do so, entrants must fill in the fields and upload a ZIP file with the pictures and proof of bank transfer or PAYPAL invoice. The deadline is the 1st of November 2013 (Friday), 23:59 (Portuguese Continental Time – GMT). It is only allowed a maximum of five pictures per contestant, format 40x60cm, colour or black and white, with 200ppi, jpeg, with maximum quality (minimum compression). Photographs of pets will not be accepted. By submitting an entry, each entrant declares to know and agree with the Rules the Regulations of the Photography Competition Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013. By doing so, the entrant also allows the organization to use personal data for purposes related to the competition and other initiatives of this association. All the photographs submitted to the competition must be the work of the entrant and must in no way constitute an act of plagiarism. Digital manipulation of the photographs entered can only be allowed if it reproduces that which can be done in the dark-room i.e. framing, colour, brightness and contrast. The original digital media must be available should the jury or the organization ask to see it.

Payment: Entries will only be accepted upon submission of proof of bank transfer or PAYPAL invoice. This document must be sent in the ZIP File that contains the photographs. Price per entrant: 3.50 EUR. Results Deployment: The results of the competition will be made known and the prizes will be awarded at the end of the talk which marks the inauguration of the “Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013 – 9th Ovar Photography Journeys” on Saturday the 9th of November 2013 in the gallery at the Centro de Arte de Ovar. Should the entrants not be able to be present at the prize-giving ceremony, they should collect the prizes within a year at the headquarters of the Associação Amigos do Cáster, in Ovar, or they can be sent to their address but the entrant will be responsible for postage and packing. All costs incurred due to the postage of prizes and/or the expenses necessary to enjoy the prizes which are not included in the prize itself, are the responsibility of the entrant. Jury: The 4-man jury is made up of two professional photographers, a representative of the Ovar city council and a member of the “Associação Amigos do Cáster”. The jury is responsible for the giving of prizes and for choosing the photographs to be displayed at the “Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013 – 9th Ovar Photography Journeys” event. The jury reserves the right not to attribute any one of the prizes mentioned in the competition rules should it consider that the photographs submitted do not fulfill the requirements stipulated therein. The decisions of the jury are final and unanimous and cannot be questioned. The “Associação Amigos do Cáster” reserves the right not to accept photographs that do not fulfill the requirements stipulated in this set of rules.

“Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013” – Ovar Awards: From all the competition entries the jury will select the 6 best photographs whose author is someone who either lives or was born in the Ovar borough. All prizes are products or services. These prizes have the following approximate values: – Winner: 550,00 Euros. – 2nd Place: 495,00 Euros. – 3rd Place: 415,00 Euros. – 4th Place: 325,00 Euros. – 5th Place: 255,00 Euros. – 6th Place: 245,00 Euros. – 7th Place: 230,00 Euros. – 8th Place: 215,00 Euros. “Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013” – Escolas de Ovar Awards: Six prizes will be awarded to pupils attending school in the borough of Ovar. Only students enrolled in the school-year 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 are allowed to participate in this photography competition. All prizes are products or services. These prizes have the following approximate values: – Winner: 300,00 Euros. – 2nd Place: 285,00 Euros. – 3rd Place: 270,00 Euros. – 4th Place: 255,00 Euros. – 5th Place: 225,00 Euros. – 6th Place: 215,00 Euros. “Ambiente Imagens Dispersas 2013” – General public Award: The winners of these prizes will be chosen by means of an online vote on the Associação dos Amigos do Cáster Facebook Page. The date will be announced through the usual means of communication of Amigos do Cáster. All prizes are products or services. These prizes have the following approximate values: – Winner: 65,00 Euros. – 2nd Place: 60,00 Euros. – 3rd Place: 60,00 Euros. – 4th Place: 50,00 Euros. Check them out in detail in the prize list.

Evaluation criteria: Photographs will be evaluated according to the following criteria: relevance to the theme, technique, composition, originality and creativity. The jury may award a Mention of Honour to some entries outside the regular awards if it sees fit.

Photography Exhibitions: Through this event an exhibition of the best images will be created. Exhibition dates: 9th November 2013 to 7th January 2014.

Observations: All entrants give permission to the Associação Amigos do Cáster to use the photographs submitted to the competition in order to publicize the event in a range of media such as website, catalogue, exhibitions, competition publicity, etc. without the competition organizers liable to any payment to the entrant. The Associação Amigos do Cáster undertakes to always mention the name or pseudonym of the author of the photograph. Each entrant will be responsible for the photographs submitted. The Associação Amigos do Cáster exempts itself from any responsibility associated with the right to use images of people, buildings, objects, animals, products of a particular make or model, commercial or otherwise, as well as any other material of any nature when captured and used in the photographs submitted by the entrants of the competition, as well as any damage caused from being exhibited to the public. The Associação Amigos do Cáster assumes no responsibility for work which may not be in perfect condition or which may be mislaid for reasons beyond the Association’s control. The Associação Amigos do Cáster reserves the right not to accept entries which do not meet the requirements established in the competition rules and regulations. Any situation that may arise which is not covered in the rules will be resolved by the competition organizers.
